Where Prophecy Stones Come From
Prophecy Stones are rare desert finds from Egypt — specifically the White Desert near Farafra, in Egypt’s Western Desert.
They began as marcasite and/or pyrite (iron sulfide). Over geologic time, they were replaced by iron oxides — mainly goethite (often called limonite), sometimes with hematite — while keeping their original knobby, starburst, or wand-like shapes. That makes them pseudomorphs: same outer form, new mineral inside.
“Prophecy Stone” is a modern trade name for this Egyptian material. In crystal lore, the name comes from a finder who reportedly had a prophetic vision while meditating with one. Early collectors sometimes mistook them for meteorites — they’re not. They’re terrestrial treasures of Egypt’s Western Desert.
